King and Queen-
A Conversation with Afro-cubist Music
In conversation with AfroCubism (2010) - a Grammy nominated album by musicians of Mali and Cuba - this series encompassing two large scale abstracts arose as a pair riffing visually on this transcultural musical cooperation. The two paintings are picking up on the iconography of a a deck of cards and playing on the idea of royal portraiture.
The geometric and biomorphic shapes of the two figures glow in rich iron oxide pigment contrasting against the grey blue background and harmonising with other color accents and mark making. The paintings incorporate copper and plant pieces that allude to the jewels of the pair.
