Of Witches, Water and GOLD
I made this diptych in the fall of 2021. My father is a historian of the Middle Ages, his favorite place are the archives, where he discovers new ways to look into time. Sometimes he shares some of his finds with me. The document that I was reading while painting this watercolor and ink series was about a witch trial, in which three women in a small town of North Rhine Westfalia were being tried for witchcraft, among them, Grote Grete, low german for Tall Greta. The document was accompanied by detailed bill of the town's grocery man who listed how many alcoholic beverages and food the judge and his court consumed, before after a few days, they had gathered the courage to try these women and sentence them to death by a common test used to discover a witch: they were thrown into a lake, if they sank, they were good human women, if they swam they were witches. While I was reading this and painting, outside an ethereal autumn reigned, the trees with their black branches were glowing against the grey sky with the golden splendor of their leaves. I dedicated the series to the women of this trial, to the swimmers.
