SOPHIA
FRESE
Electric Childhood and the Poison garden
This ongoing series deals with the garden as the fantasy of a safe harbor that is always already invaded, by poison. Likewise childhood as a sujet is a kind of mirage of blitheness and free play. I imagine the games and companionship of childhood as a forcefield that generates a kind of electricity of its own that translates into vibrant colors. But like in the garden, childhood has a dark underbelly of competition, exclusion and even violence. Both concepts, the garden and childhood are about control and the loss of it, from weeds to the wild abandonment of play, there is an unsupressable element of chaos built in that is both liberating and frightening.
